San Antonio Guides

3 days in San Antoniofor the whole family.

A flexible San Antonio family itinerary for kids, teens, parents, and grandparents—designed to help everyone experience the city without turning the trip into an exhausting checklist.

A Better Family Itinerary

See San Antoniowithout rushing everyone.

Traveling with a family of different ages changes how you should plan. Young children, teenagers, parents, and grandparents may have different energy levels and interests.

Instead of trying to fit every major attraction into three days, this itinerary uses one main area or experience each day and leaves enough flexibility for meals, rest, and time together.

Day 01 · Classic San Antonio

The Alamo& River Walk.

Start with the part of San Antonio that works especially well across generations: downtown. Visit the Alamo, explore the River Walk, and give your family time to enjoy the area instead of racing from attraction to attraction.

Morning

The Alamo

Begin earlier in the day and explore at the pace that works for your family. History-focused family members can spend more time with the exhibits while others enjoy the surrounding downtown area.

Afternoon

River Walk

Walk part of the River Walk, stop for lunch, and consider a river cruise if your group would appreciate seeing downtown while giving everyone a chance to sit and recharge.

Evening

Keep it flexible.

Large families move more slowly. Leave enough time for dinner and an easy evening rather than adding another major attraction simply because there is room on the schedule.

Day 02 · The Big Family Day

SeaWorld orSix Flags?

Pick one major attraction and let it be the focus of the day. Trying to combine two theme parks rarely makes a family trip better.

SeaWorld San Antonio

Best for · mixed ages & interests

SeaWorld can work particularly well for a multigenerational family because the day does not have to revolve entirely around thrill rides. Different family members can choose animal experiences, presentations, family attractions, or larger rides and still spend much of the day together.Plan your SeaWorld San Antonio family day →

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Best for · thrill-seekers & older kids

Consider Six Flags when roller coasters and thrill rides are a major priority for your family, particularly with older children and teenagers. Review attractions ahead of time so family members who prefer a different pace know their options.Read our Six Flags Fiesta Texas family & group guide →

Day 03 · Choose Your Pace

Finish the tripyour family's way.

By the third day, age and energy matter more than checking another attraction off a list. Choose the option that fits the people actually traveling with you.

The DoSeum

Best for · Younger kids

A strong choice when younger children need a day built around hands-on, interactive experiences rather than another long sightseeing schedule.

San Antonio Zoo, Brackenridge Park & the Witte

Best for · Mixed ages

These attractions are clustered in the same general area, making this a flexible option when your family wants animals, outdoor time, and museum experiences without crossing the city repeatedly.

Natural Bridge Caverns

Best for · Something different

A good alternative for families ready to leave the central tourist areas and experience one of the region's distinctive natural attractions.

A slower family day

Best for · Rest & time together

Large families do not need to fill every day with another major attraction. A relaxed meal, a shorter outing, and time together can be a better final day after a busy trip.

Traveling With 8+ People

Plan for the groupyou actually have.

01

Choose one anchor experience

Build each day around one major attraction or area instead of trying to cross off everything San Antonio has to offer.

02

Allow extra transition time

Parking, bathrooms, meals, loading vehicles, and getting a large family moving can take longer than expected.

03

Plan meals before everyone is hungry

Larger parties can be harder to seat at peak times, so decide where you are eating before the group reaches that point.

04

Check ages and ride requirements

For theme-park days, review ride and attraction requirements in advance so children, teens, and adults know what works for them.

05

Let the group split sometimes

A multigenerational trip does not require everyone to do every activity. Smaller groups can choose different experiences and meet again later.

06

Protect some downtime

A few unscheduled hours can make the difference between an enjoyable family trip and an exhausting one.

When Plans Change

Hot or rainy?Keep a backup plan.

San Antonio weather can change how much outdoor sightseeing feels realistic. Keep at least one indoor or lower-intensity option available instead of forcing the original itinerary.

Depending on the ages in your group, The DoSeum or the Witte Museum can provide an indoor alternative. On pleasant days, Brackenridge Park or a slower downtown outing can give everyone more breathing room.

Where You Stay Matters

Give everyone somewhereto come back together.

For a large or multigenerational family, the place you stay can become part of the itinerary. Shared meals, downtime between activities, and evenings together are easier when the group has enough sleeping and gathering space.
